Leslie Bonci, M.P.H., R.D. LDN, CSSD

A nationally-recognized sports dietitian, Leslie Bonci is the Director of Sports Nutrition in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Center for Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  Bonci is a board certified specialist in Sports Nutrition and consults with the WNBA and NCAA.  Bonci has also contributed to the ADA sports nutrition manual and is a veteran textbook author.

Additional Credentials/Experience:

  • Registered dietitian with a master's degree in public health from the University of Pittsburgh where she is now an adjunct assistant professor of nutrition
  • Consults local and national schools and universities, including the University of Texas, on topics such as eating disorders and sports nutrition
  • Serves as the sports dietitian for the Pittsburgh Steelers (for 15 years), the Milwaukee Brewers, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Riverhounds, The University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre
  • Member of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute’s Sports Nutrition Board
  • Serves as the consulting nutritionist for the WNBA and US Women’s Rugby Team, and has served as the consulting nutritionist for the US Olympics Canoe and Kayak team

Books

  • Contributing author to the sports nutrition manual by the American Dietetic Association and has written chapters for other textbooks including DeLee and Drez’s Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, ACSM’s Primary Care Sports Medicine, the IOC Basketball Handbook, and Integrated Women’s Health: Holistic Approaches for Comprehensive Care
  • Co-authored Total Fitness for Women and is the author of the American Dietetic Association Guide to Better Digestion
  • Guest editor for Clinics in Sports Medicine: Sports Nutrition Update, 2007
  • Writes regularly for the Training and Conditioning Journal and sits on the editorial board of the Journal for Athletic Training
  • Served as an author on the 2007 National Athletic Trainer’s Association position paper on disordered eating in athletes
