Smoothie in a Bowl: New Recipe from A Couple Cooks Food Blog

Add some color to your breakfast routine with this flavorful recipe for Tart Cherry Granola Smoothie Bowls from food bloggers Sonja & Alex Overhiser of A Couple Cooks.

Daily breakfasting has always been a simple affair here at the A Couple Cooks household. Some peanut butter toast and a coffee is about as fancy as we get. However, weekends afford us a bit more time and we’ve started to get a bit more creative in our morning fare.

This recipe feeds the cherry obsession we’ve developed as of late, using both frozen and dried Montmorency tart cherries. Cherries aren’t difficult to incorporate into a morning routine; dried cherries would be perfect chopped up and mixed into pancake batter, or frozen cherries sautéed into a quick compote for topping yogurt. Or even simpler, throw a handful of dried cherries and pecans on top of oatmeal. In this recipe, we’ve mixed the dried cherries into an almond and pepita granola and blended up the frozen cherries into a creamy, refreshing smoothie. The fresh lemon juice and maple syrup compliment the tart cherries perfectly in this lightly sweet power breakfast.

Perhaps you’re used to drinking a smoothie in a glass, but smoothie bowls are where it’s at if you ask us. The bowl presentation allows loading up with toppings, versus the traditional glass. Try cherry granola, chopped nuts, banana slices, berries, shredded coconut, chia seeds, bee pollen – you name it! Happy breakfasting — we’d love to hear if you give it a try.
